I want to leave SF anytime Monday night-Tuesday Afternoon for the Eastern Sierra, if you're going to Yosemite that is great too because there is a bus that crosses Tioga pass that I could catch if we get to Yosemite Valley by 5 PM.

Let me know if anybody is heading that way and has room for a boy and his backpack.

THE HIKE. On Sunday, we'll venture forth to Bassi Falls. Since my last
visit many years ago, the Forest Service has improved the dirt road,
so that most cars can drive all the way to the trailhead. The walking
distance will be 1.2 miles round trip, all on trail, with minimal
elevation gain. The altitude there is 5400 feet. We'll take a long lunch
break, with a soul-filling siesta.

PREPARATIONS. The forecast calls for nice weather . However local
afternoon thundershowers are always a possibility this time of year. It
would be a good idea to bring rain gear of some kind. A large plastic
garbage sack, with precut holes for the neck and arms will work; it
weighs very little, and takes up very little space in your rucksack or
fanny-pack.

There may be mosquitos; so bring insect repellant. I can't guarantee
the cleanliness of the creek water; so it would be a good idea to bring
at least a quart of drinking water, along with your lunch.

Other things to bring: sturdy comfortable footwear, TP, sunglasses,
sunscreen, walking stick or hiking pole(s), optional hat, optional camera.

CARPOOL INFO. We'll depart from the Nimbus Winery Shopping
Center parking lot at 9:30 AM. Starting from Sacramento, go East on
I-50. Take the Hazel exit, and turn right (South). As soon a possible,

briefly crosses into Desolation Wilderness--starting from
Wrights Lake. The upper and lower Enchanted Pools are
unparalleled beauty spots, and are two of the best swimming
holes in the Northern Sierra. Although the water may be too
cold for swimming this early in the season, the waterfalls
flowing into them are most beautiful in June.

The total distance is approximately 5 miles, with several
hundred feet of elevation gain. We'll walk partly on trail,
and partly cross-country, which will involve a little rock-
hopping, and a few creek crossings.

PREPARATIONS. Although there are relatively few mosquitos
at the Enchanted Pools themselves, there are lots of mozzies
at the trailhead. Bring a DEET-based insect repellent.
point.

DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD. Get back onto I-50 Eastbound.
Drive through Placerville, past Pollock Pines, and past the St.
Pauli Inn (on the right side of the road). Watch for the tiny
town of Kyburz. Go approximately 5 miles beyond Kyburz.
Then turn left onto Wrights Lake Road. (The sign may or may
not be up.) At first, the road is very steep. After the steep part,
you'll cross a small bridge. Then you'll drive past a
stumpy meadow. When you see a small ranger station/
information station, turn right. The trailhead is about 1/2 mile
from there. There is a restroom at the trailhead. Parking is
sometimes an issue; so I encourage everyone to carpool. The
driving time to the trailhead is just over 90 minutes.

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

THE HIKE. We will explore the Enchanted Pools Loop--which briefly crosses into Desolation Wilderness--starting from Wrights Lake. The upper and lower Enchanted Pools are unparalleled beauty spots, and are two of the best swimming holes in the Northern Sierra. However the water may be too cold for swimming this early in the season.

The total distance is approximately 5 miles, with several hundred feet of elevation gain. We will walk partly on trail, and partly cross-country, which will involve a little rock-hopping, and a few creek crossings.

PREPARATIONS. Although there are relatively few mosquitos at the Enchanted Pools themselves, there are a lot of them at the trailhead. Bring a DEET-based insect repellent.

Normally, the weather is clear and sunny this time of year. However local afternoon thundershowers are a possibility, even with an optimistic weather forecast. It would be a good idea to bring rain gear of some kind. A large plastic garbage sack, with precut holes for the neck and arms will work; it weighs very little, and takes up very little space in your rucksack or fanny-pack.

In places, the trail will be wet. Be sure to bring a change of shoes and socks for when we get back to the cars.

I can't guarantee the cleanliness of the creek water. It would be a good idea to bring 1 or 2 quarts of drinking water, along with your lunch.

Other things to bring: sturdy comfortable footwear, TP, sunscreen, sunglasses, optional hat, optional camera, and optional walking stick or hiking pole(s).

CARPOOL INFO. We will depart from the Nimbus Winery Shopping Center parking lot at 8:30 AM. Starting from Sacramento, go East on I-50. Take the Hazel exit, and turn right (South). As soon a possible, get into the left turn lane, and then turn left. Then, as soon as possible, turn left into the shopping center parking lot. I drive a white Subaru Outback station wagon. RSVP to
wimpehiker@yahoo.com
if you plan to join us. When everyone arrives, we can leave immediately, even if it's a few minutes early. If nobody RSVPs, I'll do a different hike, and will not stop at the rendezvous point.

DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD. Get back onto I-50 Eastbound. Drive through Placerville, past Pollock Pines, and past the St. Pauli Inn (on the right side of the road). Watch for the tiny town of Kyburz. Go approximately 5 miles beyond Kyburz. Then turn left onto Wrights Lake Road. (The sign may or may not be up.) At first, the road is very steep. After the steep part, you will cross a small bridge. Then you will drive past a stumpy meadow. When you see a small ranger station/information station, turn right. The trailhead is about 1/2 mile from there. There is a restroom at the trailhead. Parking is sometimes an issue; so I encourage everyone to carpool. The driving time to the trailhead is less than 2 hours.

Happy trails, Larry

So some friends and i are interested in having an outdoorsy weekend somewhere in the Sierras probably in the summer. Problem is we have a wide range of experience/fitness levels and no one can agree one what they want to do.
We have some people who want to seriously hike or rock climb and camp. others who want to leisurely go for walks but not have to "rough it". Others who want to sit around a campfire and do basically nothing.
So i think the best plan to make everyone relatively happy is to rent a large cabin (there's probably at least 10 of us so we make the non-roughers happy) someplace convenient to some decent hiking/ climbing but would also have some easy walking trails and alternative options. Everyone can do their thing during the day. meet at the cabin at night and party.
Does anyone have any suggestions on someplace in the sierras with something for everyone? or at least a place with a lot of variety as far as difficulty levels with some cabins available in the area?

I was driving through about that long ago, and it was late. I decided to get a cup o' joe to stay awake. When I tasted the coffee, I had to decide whether falling asleep at the wheel or drinking the coffee was worse. On my way back through a week or so later, I decided to give the diner another chance. Mayby I was exaggerating how bad it was in my head? Mayby I was really late when I first came through and the coffee had been sitting for hours? I drove in around breakfast time, and coffee was flowing at all the tables. There was no way that the coffee was old. So when I gave it a second chance... worse than I remembered it. It's been haunting me ever since.

I seem to have become married to my job so have been limited to day trips and afternoon activities around Tahoe. Spending most of my time working instead of living is one of many factors that has lead me to the decision to move back to Alaska at the end of this month, I am moving back for employment that is going to grant me a lot more personal freedom, especially in the free-time category. The sierra has become one of my favorite playgrounds and I shall return often.
This tribe will remain open, even though participation is pretty nil at this point, the whole Tribe network seems to have slowed down considerably over the last 6 months but its still a useful tool I believe. A lot of the self-help type tribes and of course anything to do with sex tribes are doing well- (go figure). Im sure most of the members here still at least 'check in' once in a while so dont hesitate to post a new topic or question if you desire to do so.
So I wish everyone here well and I do hope you all are getting out there and living!

Tioga Road to Open Saturday, June 17, Highways 120 and 41 Remain Open and Accessible
Three of the four roads into the park to be open

Yosemite National Park Superintendent Mike Tollefson announced today that the Tioga Road (Highway 120 East through Yosemite National Park) will open for the season on June 17, 2006 at 8 a.m.

Services along the Tioga Road and in Tuolumne Meadows will be limited. Vault toilets will be available at Tenaya Lake, Lembert Dome, and some trailheads. The Tuolumne Meadows Store, Gas Station, and the Tuolumne Lodge are expected to open in early July. All campgrounds along the Tioga Road corridor (including White Wolf, Tamarack Flat, Yosemite Creek, Porcupine Flat and Tuolumne Meadows) will remain closed until further notice.

Highway 120 (West) and Highway 41 (South) remain open 24 hours per day, seven days a week with additional staff on hand to assist visitors upon entering the park . Popular park destinations such as Wawona, Glacier Point, Yosemite Valley, Crane Flat, and Tuolumne Meadows can all be accessed via Highways 120 and 41.

Every spring, visitors wait in anticipation for Tioga Road to open, and with good reason. Yosemite’s High Sierra is exceptionally beautiful and unique at this time. Witnessing the remaining winter snow pack upon the domes and mountain peaks that rise amidst Tuolumne’s open meadows is a perspective far different from that of any other season.

Highway 140 is open from Yosemite National Park to El Portal. Highway 140 remains closed about 10 miles west of El Portal due to rock slide. Businesses and accommodations in El Portal and Mariposa are all open.

The summer season has arrived and with it comes an assortment of blooming wildflowers, flourishing foliage and magnificent waterfalls which makes for scenery that is sure to attract visitors who are seeking the ultimate Yosemite experience.

Current road and weather conditions and additional information are available 24 hours a day by calling 209/372-0200 or can be accessed online at www.nps.gov/yose.

I am so happy for the time change! Hike, bike, walk, sit on the porch, whatever, just to be outside for a while after clocking out is really nice, mother nature is even waking up a little and we are getting a few colors here and there. Now if we could get the weather to cooperate a little. I’ll bet a few of you over in the Bay & Central valley are beginning to grow web feet -? But seriously, if you are one of the folks living in harms way down there please take care, watching the Truckee flood through Reno here a couple times this winter has been eye opening to say the least.

Yes there is an amazing amount of snow up high for those still wanting to play in it, personally Im ready to do some hiking & biking, am tired of snowshoeing alone and quite frankly ‘been there, done that’. But the snow pack is going to be around a while and definitely having an impact on the summer plans, I don’t see Tioga or a few of the smaller Pass’s opening up for quite some time so some of my trips have been changed or post-poned until further notice, I know a few of you had the same problems last year - any plans for this spring? All of the small streams and rivers should be raging again all spring making the sierra all that more exciting. The falls in Yosemite are going to be a photographers dream once again, I hope to make it there several times this year with camera equipment in tow.
So whats up? Is anyone as antsy as I am for spring/summer?

Fellow volunteers...We are still short of bodies for the upcoming Marijuana Garden cleanup March 31 - April 1, 2006 at Clearwater Fire Station Northeast of Oakhurst. As noted below in the trip description, we have media coverage for this event and it is important in that it could lead to additional funding for the Trail Crew. We could use an additional 25 to 35 volunteers for this trip. Please check your calendars and see if you can join us at Clearwater. Yesterday we visited Clearwater fire station and the weather was excellent what snow was remaining for the storms earlier this week was melting very fast – and will be completely gone within the next day or two. If you could sign up for this trip before 8 PM Saturday night it would be appreciated as our data base manager will send the first of two final reports to me as to who is attend sometime after 9 PM Saturday and then again on Tuesday just after 9 pm. Thanks

The trip information!

Please join the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew in cleaning up Marijuana Grow Sites in the Sierra National Forest. We will be removing drip irrigation line, trash, fertilizer, etc. from the sites and then performing site restoration such as filling in planting holes and covering the hillsides with small branches and duff to help prevent erosion. We will be arriving at our base camp on Thursday and working on Friday and Saturday with the goal of cleaning up four sites. The CHP Helicopter will be lifting out the material on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Clean up locations will be provided each morning. Weather will play a key role in which garden sites we clean up. There will be tent camping with hot showers and full restrooms available. We will need about 60 volunteers; 40 in the field and 10 to 20 as support staff either in the kitchen or on the landing zone ground crew. All meals, tools and safety gear will be provided. You MUST wear long pants, long sleeved shirt and hiking BOOTS (no low cut hiking shoes or athletic shoes will be permitted).

We really need your help in ensuring a large turnout for this trip. The local FOX television affiliate KMPH-26 is interested in doing a story on the cleanup effort and is planning to send a reporter and camera person to cover the event. The eradication of these gardens and restoration of the natural resources damaged by these gardens have become hot button issues with California politicians such as U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and U.S. Representatives Jerry Lewis and George Radanovich. As one of the only, if not the only volunteer group performing these cleanups, we need to make sure are efforts are publicized. If we wish to have funding provided for continuing and increasing these cleanup efforts, it is imperative that the word gets out on the seriousness and extent of the problem.

To attend this trip you must register for it on the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew website at http://www.trailcrew.org/2006/registration2a.htm. We ask that you sign up as soon as possible so that we can begin to assemble teams and determine assignments. Additional information on the trip and directions to the base camp can be found on the discussion board at the following link: http://trailcrew.org/forum4/viewforum.php?f=34

Location: Clearwater USFS Fire Station/Work Center, on Minarets Road, North of the town of North Fork.

Date: Thursday March 30th arrive at Clearwater and set up kitchen
Friday & Saturday, March 31st & April 1st, Cleanup and restoration work (Sunday if needed)

Thank you for your work with the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew and we hope you will join us March 30 through April 2 at Clearwater Fire Station.
Not a large store by any means but they have always had a good selection of the ‘basics’ we all use along with a very knowledgeable and friendly staff. So obviously the prices on their remaining merchandise will be discounted quite a bit over the next few weeks so anyone shopping there has a good chance of finding a pretty good deal. They have also been selling some greeting cards I make with my Sierra photography, I am going to regroup on that a little bit but hope to find another outlet soon. So if you happen through Truckee stop by and take a look, they may just have something left there you cant live without.

It does remain very warm up here though and you dont have to go very far to run out of the snow, Truckee has just a few inches but with the temps what they are that may not last long. I plan to get out and snowshoe at least one day this weekend, probably near Castle Peak or Donner Peak, if anyone is headed up to the mountains and would like to get out there drop me a post here-

Hey gang,
So what kind of plans do you all have for the upcoming 3 day weekend - for those who aren’t going out to Burning Man I guess I should say-?
Truth be told here I have been nursing an internal injury all summer that has kept my activities severely tamed down. I do feel pretty lame for not planning or partaking in more activities here in this tribe, sorry. Later this winter I do plan to take the time off from work to fix what ails me and be back to 100% eventually.

This weekend I plan to hang around the Tahoe area, Saturday includes renting a kayak and doing some paddling along the east shore complete with breaks for lunch and sunbathing whenever I feel like it. Sunday I am going to catch the shuttle from Spooner Lk up to Tahoe Meadows and ride that section of the TRT and join into the Flume Trail and back to spooner on the MTB. This is such a great ride, I have done it every year since moving down here and don’t want to miss this one. Monday I have a friend flying in from Durango, she and I plan to be biking a trail or two in Truckee that afternoon followed by some good food probably at one of the great mexican places there.
As usual my activities are pretty spontaneous but am always up for more company - if anyone wants to join in just let me know.
Whats everyone else doing? Hopefully getting a bit farther from civilization than I will be....

i'm looking for great nature, river or lake (not the ocean), and less people/tourists. untouched nature...

i don't the area here (i'm relatively new here), and i'm going to be alone this weekend. i don't know, could it be dangerous, just driving to somewhere, stop and hike and sleep in the car?

if you can give me any ideas where to go, that would be great. it's ok to drive up to 3 hours from the east bay (berkeley).

I posted the following message in "Bay Area Hikers" If you're interested in what we are doing, go to that tribe and check it out. Please don't respond here as I would like to keep the reponses consolidated.

Just joined this tribe and I'm psyched! I moved to the Bay Area fall of last year, and now that Spring is here and Summer is around the corner, I'm getting super antsy to hit the trail. I've met all kinds of cool people, people that like hiking and the outdoors, but nobody that's too interested or prepared for a multi-day wilderness trip. I once worked in the Yosemite wilderness for summmer, so I know the area well. In general, the Sierra is my favorite area to go to, Sequoia might be my favorite, especially the east side.

Anyway, I'm thinking there are at least a few people like me that are looking to enjoy dark starry heavens, gorgeous mountain vistas, forests, waterfalls, etc. and meet some awesome people in the process. So, I'd like to organize a mixer for us folks to get together. I notied that pyrokitten organized something like this a year ago, and it was at the pacficcoast brewery in downtown Oakland.
Seems like a good central spot unless everybody that responds is in SF.
See www.pacificcoastbrewing.com/map.htm

I'm thinking the week of May 8. I'm not antcipating too many responses so, but after I get a few, I'll pick the day and time that is best for the most people.

I also know that if we do get together it'll be hard for people to agree on a time and place to go backpacking, so try to come with flexibility in mind. Maybe if there are enough people, we'll form a few trips.
you can email me at jdmarcus@gmail.com
I am going to head over the hill to Colfax and hike Stevens Trail, the book says this is a 9 mile hike round trip however I think it is closer to 8 myself. The trail winds its way down through the canyon to the american river where there is a great place to stop for lunch and just relax a while. The wildflowers should be out pretty nice this time of year along the trail too. This hike is different than most around here, the trail is not steep however you are climbing on the way back to the trailhead rather than from it like most mountain hikes. This is a great hike and I would enjoy some company and would like the chance to meet some of you.
I will be at the Starbucks in downtown Colfax at 10 AM Saturday, no Im not really a starbucks fan, its just a good location to meet - and they have caffeine! If you are coming up 80 take the Colfax exit, turn left and go over the freeway and then left again - cant miss it, the trail head is less than a mile away. Coming from this side its kind of hard for me to plan any carpooling for those over there but if any of you wish to take the reigns on that one please do so. If anyone would like I will email you my cell # for GP. Bring plenty of water and a lunch, there is a subway sandwich shop and a small store in Colfax but not much else I believe.

Ill be watching the weather picture so check back in here.

I am in the market for a new pump for my bicycle tires and was looking at the new, small pumps that use the CO2 cartridges - has anyone had any experience with these? I like the size/weight factor but would like to hear from someone who has used them before I actually buy one - anyone?

So the sun has been shining lately on this side of the hill and it has been getting quite warm in the daytime, enough to make me wish it was spring already and I can get out there on the trails. What kind of trips do you all have planned or want to do this year?
Myself, I have quite a long list, weekend trips anyway, I believe that is all my job is going to allow me to do for a while. So far I’ve got 3 different weekend trips in Yosemite as soon as the road over Tioga opens, including at least one trip to the valley while the falls still have water running over them would be nice. I look forward to a trip back out to the Redwoods as soon as the Rhododendrons start blooming (for photo purposes) if anyone know when this happens Id appreciate it if you could let me know, other wise I can call the ranger station out there. I would like to hike the PCT through the Desolation Wilderness this summer also, I’ve heard its crowded but would like to do it at least once. The area of Kinney Lakes on the way to Raymond lake from Ebbets pass is on the list for late spring when the wildflowers are out. A trip back to Feather Falls E of Oroville is on the list and later in the year after it gets blazing hot up here, a weekend out hiking on the coast will sound pretty good too. Talking with a couple friends here the Trinty Mountains by Shasta and the Ruby Mountains in NE Nevada come up once in a while also, although they may be more than just weekend adventures. So yea, along with numerous dayhikes, car camping trips and MTB riding this could be fun.
So what are your plans? Whats up with all of you? Anyone have suggestions on any of the areas I’ve listed?

Id like to extend a welcome to those members who have joined in the past few months, come on in and feel free to use this tribe as you wish for any of the outdoor recreational activities of the area. Post trip notices/reports, ask questions, post and comment on photo’s, whatever you like, its your message board.
Personally my work schedule, especially the winter months is too sporadic for me to plan trips too far in advance however that to will get better as summer approaches, and I do really hope to plan some group activities, or at least some more centrally located activities so more people can participate. Please feel free to post your own outings or ideas as you wish. I have met a few of you and I do hope to meet most of you eventually if we can keep this going, this tribe is yours, lets hear what you would like to do or places you would like to go. Have fun,
I just returned from a back country skiing and snow camping trip in the eastern Sierras. It was a chance for me to tag along with friends who are experienced snow campers. What a great time! The camping isn't bad at all if you've got enough warm layers with you for all levels of activity.
